‘War weekend’ helps charities

BURY turned back the clock to celebrate a fundraising Forces and Forties Weekend.

A successful cabaret and dance event, allied to a display of military vehicles and other entertainment, were among the attractions.

Proceeds raised will go to Help for Heroes and Bury-based children’s charity Hurdles.

Organised by Events for Us, the weekend kicked off with a cabaret and dance night at Bury’s Castle Armoury.

More than 230 people attended, some of whom wore 1940s-style military and civilian dress.

Organiser Tony Todd said: “It was a fantastic evening.”

Acts included “Forces sweetheart” Katie Spitfire, the Tommy Lowe Big Band, with vocalist Don Graham, and Swing Commanders.

The following day, the Forces and Forties Weekend switched to the area around the Flying Shuttle pub in Clerke Street. There was a display of military vehicles which proved a popular attraction.

Northenden Pipe Band entertained visitors and there were displays from the British Chen Style Tai Chi College and the Woolfold Morris Troupe.

A fundraising auction of military and 1940s memorabilia took place in the Flying Shuttle.

Another attraction was brewery Daniel Thwaites’ shire horses pulling a dray.

Mr Todd said the total raised for charity would be announced once all the money had been collected from those who had pledged donations.
