Fresh food enthusiasts plan for the good life

FRESH food enthusiasts in Ramsbottom are campaigning to turn the town into a horticultural haven.

Green-fingered locals want to increase the amount of local produce grown and eaten in the town.

But with a long waiting list for allotments, organisers are rallying support for plans to create a community vegetable patch.

Up to 100 people attended Ramsbottom Library for a meeting to show their interest in the scheme being dubbed “Incredible Edible”.

On Monday, a public meeting will be held to gather more volunteers and drive the plans forward.

Organiser Lynn Leyland-Mather said: “I was really heartened by the enthusiasm and the range of skills offered at the last meeting and I think it is going to be crucial to try and keep up the momentum. There has been lots happening, local interest has continued to grow and we are getting information on places we can actually start getting digging.”

Volunteers have already secured a plot of land in Nuttall Park for growing herbs, as well as an area behind the library in Carr Street for growing fruit and vegetables.

The group is also restoring a derelict orchard in Greenmount.

The idea is based on an initiative launched in Todmorden two years ago.

The Incredible Edible Ramsbottom meeting is at Christ Church and Neighbourhood Centre, off Stubbins Lane, at 7.30pm. Anyone interested can contact Lynn at leylandlynn@phone coop.coop.
