Packing for a school trip with a difference

YOUNGSTERS packed bags of shopping to raise cash for an African adventure.

Pupils from Bury CE High School raised nearly £400 thanks to a fundraising bag packing stint at Radcliffe’s Asda store in Pilkington Way.

Last Saturday’s event was the latest in a series of activities to fund a trip by 31 pupils who will be travelling to Namibia next year. They will visit Bury CE’s partner school, Mavuluma Junior Secondary, located in Katima Mulilo.

During their two-week stay, the youngsters will be involved in trekking and a community project. Each pupil must raise just under £2,800 and they are currently engaged in collecting money and seeking sponsorship.

The link with the school in Namibia came when Bury C of E High’s head of ICT, Ben Redmond, worked at the African school as part of a placement with Voluntary Service Overseas.

Since then, the Bury school has undertaken a host of curriculum and charitable activities. A successful Dance Namibia event alone raised £1,000.

Speaking about their African partner school, Bury C of E teacher Sally Sumner said: “Education is supposedly free up to grade 12 but all schools charge fees. At Mavuluma, learners have to pay about £25 a term. Many cannot afford this.”

Additionally, the local education ministry has run out of paper and exercise books for schools.
