Army duo pledge to serve country

TWO men from Bury were among 19 recruits who pledged their allegiance to the British Army in a special ceremony.

Andrew Greaves, aged 20, and Ryan Gray, aged 21, who both come from the borough, have joined the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and gathered with their families and high-ranking officers at the Fusilier Museum in Moss Street, Bury.

The regiments commanding officer, Colonel Jim Landon MBE, led the ceremony.

The 19 will now begin training in disciplines such as map reading, first aid, living in the field and camouflage.

Bury’s Army Careers office has been based at the museum since it opened last summer.

Office manager, Staff Sgt John Slater, said: “The regiment maintains close links with the North West and was formed in 1968 from four distinguished regiments, including the famous Lancashire Fusiliers, whose history goes back to 1685.

“The Fusiliers are an experienced and professional infantry regiment in the British Army, having served with distinction in both Iraq and Afghanistan in recent years.”
