A RUNNER from Bury has tackled one of the world’s toughest road challenges to raise money for a breast cancer charity.
Helen Ryan, aged 44, a former Bury Grammar School for Girls pupil completed the New York Marathon in under five hours.
She travelled to the “Big Apple” with her parents Pat and Derek Ryan, of Walmersley Road, Bury, on November 1, where she joined 42,000 other runners for the event.
It was the first full marathon for Miss Ryan who has so far raised more than £700 for Breast Cancer Care.
Mr Ryan said: “It was a good time for someone running their first marathon. The weather was not ideal, ask Paula Radcliffe! It had been raining and there was a strong wind.”
Miss Ryan chose the charity because “we all know somebody, whether male or female, young or old, who has been touched by breast cancer,” she said.
