POLICE are continuing their investigation into alleged expense abuses by Bury North MP David Chaytor.

In June, Scotland Yard announced it would probe the spending of a small number of MPs.

Mr Chaytor then confirmed he was one of those under the spotlight.

In a statement this week, the Met said inquiries were ongoing and no arrests had been made.

“Our officers are continuing with their investigations. Inquiries are ongoing and we do not know, as yet, when they will conclude,” said a Met spokeswoman.

The investigation was sparked by a Daily Telegraph expose, which called into question the finances of dozens of MPs, including Mr Chaytor.

It was alleged that he claimed £12,925 to pay a mortgage that had already been repaid.

While Mr Chaytor admits he did claim the amount, he refuted the allegation that he did it deliberately.

Speaking to the Bury Times in May, Mr Chaytor said: “I want to apologise unreservedly for the problems that have been caused by my error. I am determined to clear my name.

“I will co-operate fully with any investigation and will now assemble all the evidence to refute the allegation.”

Mr Chaytor has continued in the role since the allegations surfaced but has said he would step down before the next election, which must be held before June 3, 2010.
