Royal date as Queen Megan is crowned

IT was a regal weekend for youngster Megan Burton and her friends at St Margaret’s Church in Prestwich.

For 12-year-old Megan was crowned as the parish’s rose queen during a Sunday School anniversary celebration.

The ceremony took place in St Margaret’s Vicarage gardens on Saturday, June 27, and Megan’s crowning marked the retirement of her predecessor, Bethany Prosser.

Megan, a pupil at Bury CE High School, was accompanied by her retinue of younger Sunday School children. She was crowned by Mrs Jacqueline Jackson, who teaches at the Sunday School.

The formalities, which included a procession of the queens, the crowning ceremony and speeches led by parish priest, the Rev Debby Plummer, were followed by an afternoon of family fun which included English cream teas, refreshments, music, races, sideshows, stalls, and games.

St Margaret’s has crowned a Rose Queen every year since 1951, when the traditional custom was revived to celebrate the church’s centenary.

The following morning, a sung Eucharist service was held in the church to mark the end of the Sunday School year, attended by more than 160 worshippers.

Megan distributed book prizes to the children to mark their attendance at Sunday School through the year. Places are now available in the Sunday School for the new year, starting in September.

Children aged three and above are welcome. The Sunday School meets from 9.45am to 11am on Sunday mornings in term time in the Church House on St Margaret’s Road.
