A family had a lucky escape following a suspicious fire at their home in Ashton-under-Lyne.

Detectives are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Shortly after 5am on Thursday the blaze started at a house in Albemarle Terrace.

Four children and their two parents living at the house managed to get out with only one family member suffering minor burns.

Detective Constable Peter Slater, of Tameside CID, said: "Fires can spread quickly and it is fortunate nobody was injured.

"We are treating this fire as suspicious and I'm appealing to anyone who may have seen anyone at the time to call us.

"It was early in the morning and there may not have been many people around, so I'd like to hear in particular if anyone saw somebody walking away from the house."

Anyone with any information should call Tameside CID on 0161 856 9250 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
