LATEST plans to move Bury and Whitefield Jewish Primary School to green belt land have been withdrawn.
The controversial proposals to build a new school to the west of Old Hall Lane in Whitefield were due to go before Bury Council’s planning committee on November 25, but were pulled by the applicant, Rabbi Avroham Jaffe, a few days prior to the meeting.
The developments proposed moving the 165-pupil school from its current site in Parr Lane, Unsworth, which governors say is not up to modern educational standards.
A new building would accommodate 210 pupils with outdoor sports facilities and a nursery and creche for up to 45 children.
More than 1,000 people had signed a petition supporting the rebuilding of the school but the project also sparked fierce opposition.
Written objections were submitted by 283 residents.
Planning bosses had recommended that the application be rejected as it failed to demonstrate the “very special circumstances” required to build on a green belt site.
