A train derailment has blocked lines causing disruption to some services.
The incident has been reported at Wigan North Western station.
As a result trains going through Wigan North Western and St Helens Central are to be cancelled or revised.
Tarins will not stop at stations between these two spots.
A Northern spokesperson said: "Due to a derailed train at Wigan North Western some lines are blocked.
"Train services running through this station will be cancelled or revised.
"All stations between Wigan North Western and St Helens Central will not be served."
Customers are urged to check the journey on the Northern website to see whether it is still going ahead.
Northern ticket holders travelling from Wigan North Western towards Liverpool Lime Street are advised to travel on Northern services from Wigan Wallgate to either Headbolt Lane or Southport and board MerseyRail services to Liverpool Lime Street.
Northern ticket holders travelling from Blackpool North towards Liverpool Lime Street are advised to travel on Northern services to Preston and change for alternative services towards Ormskirk where onward connections with MerseyRail services are available to Liverpool Lime Street.
