With the cost-of-living crisis placing a huge financial strain on many this winter, councils near Bury have introduced "warm hubs" to help people.

Places like Oldham, Wigan and Stockport have introduced the facilities in public spaces like libraries, where people can get a free hot drink and take part in activities.

The council is in the process of finishing an audit of possible venues where "warm hubs" could be set up as well as the borough groups that could help run them.

A council spokesman said: “We are concerned about the effect that fuel prices may have on our most vulnerable residents, and we’re keen to support our communities during this difficult time.

“Bury held a cost-of-living summit last month attended by more than 80 people, including from voluntary and community sector organisations who work with people on the front line.

“It was clear that there is a substantial number of community and faith venues which can be used to provide help.

“We are finalising an audit of all these venues and organisations and how they can provide a warm environment for people to come to if they are struggling with the cold, and access wider support.

“Once finalised, all this information will be added to our Bury Directory in one table with all the details of venues and timings.

“This will be promoted through all our community networks and health and social care partners.

“In addition, we will continue to promote opportunities where people can come to warm safe venues and spend time including our libraries, art galleries and leisure facilities.”
