Brotherly support brings big boost - walking blog part two

THROUGHOUT April, May and June, kindhearted walker Ian Orrell (60) will take on the challenge of his life.

Ian Orrell, of Higher Lane, Whitefield, is walking 874 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats in a bid to raise £6,000 for the Emmaus homeslessness charity.

In this regular diary, the retired teacher tells of his adventure.

On April 9 Today, I was joined by my brother Keith and together we reached Crediton and tomorrow we will walk to Tiverton.

During the next few days, I will be joined by various friends so the whole journey takes on more of a group feel.

Today's route took us along some virtually forgotten byways in Central Devon.

The largest village we came to was that of Spreyton and as it was lunch time we made for the pub.

This was thatched and liquor had been sold on that site since 1589.

Its name is the Tom Cobley - this was the pub where Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davy, Dan'll Whiddon Harry Hawke and uncle Tom Cobley all set off for Widdecombe Fair in 1805.

It sold an impressive array of local and guest beers as well as three types of cider.

It is the only pub I can remember that the internal bar has a thatched roof as well.
