GREATER Manchester Police are urging people on the look out for counterfeit banknotes after several fakes were seized in Whitefield.

Three counterfeit £20 Bank of Ireland banknotes have been seized by GMP after they were presented at a Whitefield takeaway on January 10, at around 2pm.

The notes were handed over by three females, estimated to be aged between 10 and 14, who exchanged two of the notes individually for a can of a soft drink, and change was given.

The third note was seized by a member of the takeaway's staff.

The notes were then collected by a Police Community Support Officer and were identified as fake, as all three had the same serial number.

Police Constable Richard Garland, from Greater Manchester Police, warned people to be cautious when such banknotes are passed for small value items.

He added: "From time to time we get reports of counterfeit £20 notes being passed — often the less common types of Sterling banknotes.

"A common denominator is that three person tendering is almost always purchasing low value items to obtain the maximum amount of change."
