NUTTALL Park is in the running to be voted the nation’s favourite green space.

Bordered by the River Irwell, Ramsbottom’s Nuttall Park is one of 13 Lancashire parks competing for the UK’s Best Park Award.

Supporters are encouraged to cast their vote to ensure Nuttall Park is listed as the nation’s favourite. A tea room, perimeter path, wildflower garden and well-equipped playground are all in its favour.

The Friends of Nuttall Park have made vast improvements to the site in recent years, and carry out regular clean-ups to ensure its upkeep.

Volunteers have organised dozens of community events to fundraise for new equipment, plants and other improvements in the park.

In 2016, the group raised more than £8,000 for the case, with some £5,000 left to spend this year.

The well-loved Ramsbottom park, which turns 90 next year, one of 13 Lancashire parks nominated for the UK’s Best Park title.

It joins Oldham’s Hare Hill Park, Blackburn’s Witton Country Park and Roe Lee Park, and Burnley’s Towneley Park, among others. A total of 360 sites have been nominated across the UK, including small community gardens, large nature reserves, sports fields and playgrounds.

The competition is spearheaded by national charity Fields in Trust. Chief executive Helen Griffiths said: “Despite their clear health benefits, parks and green spaces are facing an uncertain future - across the UK outdoor spaces are under threat.

“The UK’s Best Park Award celebrates the parks and green spaces which are so vital to the communities that use them.”
