A TEENAGER has been recognised for her dedication to the community.

Dalia Brown was awarded Young Citizen of the Year at Prestwich Carnival, for her various volunteer roles with a local charity and school.

The 17-year-old, who is the head leader of Whitefield Youth Centre, was awarded the accolade by the Mayor of Bury, Cllr Dorothy Gunther, at Prestwich Carnival on June 25.

Dalia, who was nominated by her twin sister Alex, volunteers at the Fed social care charity in Prestwich, where she assists families who are less fortunate.

She also works with children with special needs, providing them and their parents with extra support.

Dalia’s sister, Alex, said: “I have a lot of admiration for my sister who always gets involved and does what she can to give back to her community.”

Cindy Willcock, a member of the carnival committee, added: “Presenting the Young Citizen of the Year award is one of the mayor’s most important duties at the carnival every year.

“Dalia broke Facebook records for our Prestwich Carnival page as the announcement post to say she had won received the largest viewers, most likes and comments we have ever received.

“We salute you Dalia, well done.”

The carnival committee also presented prizes to the ‘best float’ winners in this year’s grand parade.

Growling Groomers took first prize for its dog van and costumes, while the 1st Lancs Mohawks came second with an under the sea-themed float and the Phoenix Youth Club was awarded third place for its Diversity Tree.

Ms Willcock added: “Prestwich carnival would like to congratulate the best float winners for the grand parade.

“The parade boasted some of the most colourful and culturally diverse floats and community groups yet, along with a wide variety of music, vintage cars and much more.”
