A DEDICATED headteacher has taken over a primary school in Whitefield after winning over its pupil’s approval.

Martin Van Hecke has taken the reins at Whitefield Community Primary School, stepping in after impressing pupils following an interview by the school council.

Mr Van Hecke worked as deputy headteacher at Sunny Bank Primary School for six years before taking up his new position in April.

With 11 years of experience in teaching behind him, Mr Van Hecke said: “I was interviewed by the school council. They asked some really challenging questions as they were very keen to ensure they chose the correct person to lead learning at their school.

“They played a major part in choosing their new headteacher.

“Although Sunny Bank and Whitefield Community school aren’t too far from each other, the area is very different and the community is much more diverse, which is great.

“The children have been so welcoming since I arrived and have been really keen to get to know me, so it’s been lovely coming here.

“I want to make sure this school is the school of choice for the community and ensure that we continue to offer an enriched curriculum.”
