A PRESTWICH high school is hoping to build a new science block to make room for extra pupils.

An application has been submitted to Bury Council to build a single and two storey extension at Parrenthorn High School, to form a new science block.

The proposals will include six new science laboratories and a new science preparation room, two chemical storerooms, two cleaners’ storerooms, a stairs and lift.

A statement from Bury Council Architectural Services, on behalf of the school based in Heywood Road, said: “A review of the existing building and current suitability issues has taken place, the conclusion indicates that there is a shortfall in accommodation and a need to increase capacity from 900 pupils to 1,050 pupils.

“In order to achieve the requirements the proposal is to relocate some existing undersized classrooms into the existing undersized science area and construct a new dedicated two-storey science block.

“This will include a single-storey associated prep room adjacent to the main school buildings, this new block will be accessed via new corridors from the existing main school corridors.”
