RESIDENTS are celebrating a victory after a pharmacy opened in Whitefield following eight years of campaigning.

After years of campaigning, Bury South MP Ivan Lewis called for crisis talks in 2013 after health officials decided not to open a chemist on the Hillock Estate.

Since then, Mr Lewis along with Tory and Labour councillors continued their campaign for a pharmacy to open as the nearest one — The Co-op Pharmacy — is more than a mile away in Elms Square.

Now residents are celebrating after health bosses supported the opening of Jhoots Pharmacy in Albert Place.

Pharmacist and branch manager Taskeel Khan said: “Business has been picking up substantially since we launched last week.

“We’ve even had talks about providing a minor ailment service, which enables us to prescribe and give medicines to patients, helping to relieve pressure on local GP services.

“Residents have visited and said they’ve been desperate to see a chemist on the estate after eight years of campaigning, but not everyone is aware that we have opened.

“They’re delighted that we are here and serving their community so the word is spreading fast, which is fantastic.

“Some residents have asked about getting a Post Office here now that they have their pharmacy, so we’re going to see what we can do about getting one in the back.

“It would be an extra service offering even more to the residents, which is clearly what they want.”

Mr Khan welcomed the Mayor of Bury, Cllr Mike Connolly, Bury Council leader Cllr Rishi Shori and residents to enjoy tea and cake at an official opening on Tuesday, March 7.

Cllr Shori said: “I am delighted that the Hillock area of Whitefield is to get a new pharmacy, following years of campaigning by local residents and councillors.

“It will help bring health services closer to people in their own neighbourhoods, which will particularly help vulnerable people who cannot travel far.

“I was also pleased to attend the official opening and meet the team behind the pharmacy, and I wish them every success.”

The chemist is open from Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 6pm, Saturdays from 9am until 2pm and on Sundays from 11am to 1pm.
