A NEW cooker has been installed at a community kitchen in Whitefield.

Local councillors are now encouraging residents to get involved with activities at the Elms Community Centre, in Green Lane.

The new cooker has been fitted to support the centre’s luncheon club, which takes place every Thursday and provides a two course meal, bingo and a raffle.

Cllr David Jones, chairman of the management association, said: “Our popular luncheon club has allowed us to reinvest centre funds to buy new kitchen equipment including a state of the art electric cooker. Resident chef Paul Grimshaw produces some excellent menus for members of the community centre the least we could do was to give him the very best equipment.”

Cllr Paul Adams said: “The old cooker was on its last legs. We are supporting the community centre so it can remain as a focal hub for the local area. It underwent complete refurbishment last year and is now not only a community facility but a base for social services day care. The centre relies heavily on volunteers and without the ongoing support of Vicky Gardner and Ann Adams, there would be a real struggle to maintain the current sessions.”
