HUNDREDS of supporters flocked to Sedgley Park Rugby Club for an annual charity rugby match.

The club’s fourth team played against a team of “legends” to raise money for Bury Hospice in memory of Sarah Taylor, from Whitefield, who died of cancer aged 28 in February 2016.

Sarah’s parents Bill and Lorraine Taylor were presented with a club shirt with the number 30, recognising Sarah’s birthday on June 30. Lorraine said the moment was “very emotional” but thanked everybody for their support on the day.

“Honestly it felt like the whole of Whitefield was there,” said Lorraine.

She added she especially wanted to thank Maggie and Darren Weatherall who organised the event.

Steve Ward, chairman of the Park Lane club and referee for the day, said: “The game was absolutely brilliant. There were a lot of old first teamers in the legends team, so there were a lot of great memories.

“As a rugby club we have always been committed to supporting Bury Hospice and we will continue to do so in memory of Sarah.” The event raised over £2,000 for the charity in Rochdale Old Road.

Fundraiser Nicola Ainsworth said: “We have worked closely with Lorraine and her family and friends and we can’t thank them enough.”
