RELATIVES of a Breightmet woman who died from cancer walked more than 80 miles in her memory.

Chrissie Doherty died from cervical cancer last September aged 44 and since then her relatives have been raising money in her memory.

Her sister Leanne Clarke, 24, decided to do this year's Midnight Memories Walk to raise £1,000 for Bolton Hospice, the charity her sister chose before she died.

However, as the walk got closer her brother Roy Clarke was disappointed that she was not hitting her donations target.

Mr Clarke who lives in Llandudno, Wales, said: "I was watching the money slowly going in and she just wasn't getting as much as she hoped so I thought what can I do to help? So I told her that I would walk from my house to Bolton to do the walk with her."

The 35-year-old and his cousin Andrew Wyte started their 82.4 mile trek at 2.50pm on Friday.

They walked for over 24 hours before arriving in Bolton shortly before 6pm on Saturday.

Mr Clarke said: "I've never walked that far before, I usually only walk 30 miles around near where I live so this was a big challenge. I thought the first 30 miles was a doddle but then after that I really started to feel it. We made the mistake of stopping for half an hour and it was really hard to get going again."

The pair did not stop to sleep and powered on only stopping for food twice.

However as they had not done any training for the event, they were feeling the effects at the end.

Mr Clarke said: "My knees feel like they belong to someone else. It was really tough and we're a bit achey now.

"I was supposed to be doing the eight mile Midnight Memories walk too to finish it off but there was just no way that I could do it. My feet were hurting too much."

The rest of the team did go on to complete the walk which was started by actress Maxine Peake in Victoria Square on Saturday at 10pm.

The team included Miss Clarke and other members of her family, Stephanie Titchener, Rebecca Titchener and Alex Henderson.

Miss Clarke from Prestwich said: "We're really proud of them for completing it and this is the first time we have done the Midnight Memories walk but it's a great event, lots of people have turned up to support it."
