A DISABLED youngster is riding high after generous fundraisers bought him a specially customised bike that will let him get out of his wheelchair and play.

Jack Wood was presented with the gift by family and friends at the Lord Clive pub on Saturday and has since taken it for a spin near his home, in Westminster Avenue, Whitefield, with twin brother Alfie.

The seven-year-old, who is a dedicated Bury FC fan, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy just before his first birthday and also suffers from a form of epilepsy.

Jack attends Millwood Primary Special School in Radcliffe and his family are now planning to use the rest of the funds raised to buy some new equipment for his school pals, as well as new sensory lighting for Jack's bedroom.

Mum Nicola Wood, aged 26, said: "We did a fundraiser last year and ordered the bike then. But we had to put it on hold while we were having an extension built on the house and because he was in hospital for a little while. He's all better now, though, and it was great to be able to finally give it to him on Saturday.

"We raised £1,584 but the bike only cost £610, so the rest of the money will go towards some new sensory lights for his room and Jack also wants to donate some to Millwood. At first, he wanted to give it to Bury FC but we managed to talk him out of that.

"It will be nice to buy some equipment for the school which Jack can use there and which can benefit a lot of other children too.

"Jack started at Millwood in 2014 and is so happy there. He has come on leaps and bounds, it's the best thing we could have done for him."

The specially designed bike means that Jack will now have more freedom to play with his friends, and Nicola says he is already reaping the benefits.

She added: "Having the bike means that he can get out of his wheelchair and interact with other children independently, which will make a huge difference to him.

"He went out on a ride around the estate after school on Monday with his brother stood on the back with him. Jack absolutely loved it.

"He knew that we were fundraising to buy him a bike but he hadn't seen it. He was totally gobsmacked when he saw it, absolutely over the moon."
