THERE have been encouraging signs of recovery for a young car crash victim in the last week.

Lucy Hill, of Laburnum Drive, Whitefield, was seriously injured when a car hit her moped in Thailand on January 9.

The incident sparked a worldwide appeal for blood donations, as the 21 year old has a relative rare blood type. Hundreds of tourists responded by giving blood.

The former Castlebrook High School pupil has been in hospital in the northern city of Chiang Mai since and her parents said she is making progress towards recovery each day.

Last Thursday, Lucy had a successful operation on her pelvis and, two days later, she summoned the strength to talk to her dad Phil on the phone for the first time since the crash.

Afterwards, Phil, who is at home in Whitefield, shared his news with his Facebook friends. In a post, he said: "She could only whisper a few words, but it was amazing!

"She has been moved to a private room now, so hopefully, onwards an upwards."

On Tuesday, Phil said Lucy had been for another MRI scan so doctors could assess the damage to her leg.

"She may need further surgery on her leg but we're not sure yet"

Lucy's mum Alison, who is at her bedside, said: "Lucy is making small steps every day.

"She now opens one eye but I'm sure she knows I am here for her.

"I would like to thank the Ravavej Hospital for their help and patience with me, especially the director Wirachat Lertnithikul and the English coordinator Gercileen Del Prado.

"I would also like to thank (Lucy's close friend) Lauren Hall.

"She is one amazing lady and the other is to the young boys and girls at Deejai Backpackers where Lucy was staying who have come every day and supported her."

Supporters have donated more than £5,000 to help with Lucy's medical expenses. You can visit tinyurl.com/helpforlucy for more information.

Angela Critchley, who is a friend of the Hill family, has organised a fundraising evening at the Sir Robert Peel pub in Sunnybank Road, Unsworth, at 8pm on January 30.

There will be games, a raffle, music and food and tickets cost £10, with all proceeds going to Lucy's family.

You can buy tickets from the pub or by calling Mrs Critchley on 07940 007 099.
