BURY Football Club fans are paying some of the cheapest ticket prices at their level, new figures show.

Each year, the BBC measures the price of being a football fan at clubs across the country and statistics out today show the lowest adult entrance fee for League One games at Gigg Lane is £18, compared with £15 last year when the Shakers were in the division below.

The £18 fee this year is cheaper than 17 of Bury’s league rivals. Three charge the same and three are cheaper. Gillingham and Wigan are joint cheapest on £15.

The cheapest season ticket costs £250 and only Coventry (£249) and Bradford (£149) can beat that in League One.

Fans flocking to Gigg Lane every other Saturday must stump up £3.20 to tuck into a pie. Only four clubs charge more and the priciest pie at Coventry (£3.50).

And if you wanted to wash that down with a cup of tea, it would cost you £2.20 at Gigg Lane – the joint most expensive in the league alongside three other clubs.

A replica shirt costs £45 at Bury’s club shop, which is the joint highest price in the league. A children’s shirt costs £35.

Five clubs charge the same or more and Bury charge £5 more for shirts than last last season.

Bury are one of only seven League One clubs who offer tickets at discounted prices if they bought before a certain date.

A Bury FC spokesman said: "The survey is quite useful as it gives us the chance to analyse where we are in comparison to other clubs at the same level.

“Entrance prices are tremendous value for money.

“The attendances are about 1,400 up on the start of last season. We’re going in the right direction and we’re hoping to attract even more fans to Gigg Lane over the season.

"We have been negotiating with the catering company that has the contract for Gigg Lane for some time and have told them that the prices are higher than we believe they should be.

"Sadly, they have not agreed to do anything other than to hold the price.”

The spokesman added that, though the club was conscious that shirt prices were relatively high, bosses had received positive feedback from fans about the quality of shirts, which are the only shirts outside the Premier League to be made by New Balance.

The publication of the figures, under the BBC Sport Price of Football Study project, illustrates how much English football fans fork out compared to their European counterparts.

The cheapest season ticket at the home of European champions Barcelona costs £73, while the cheapest matchday ticket at German champions Bayern Munich is £11.

While Shakers fans may be envious of those attractive prices, they can perhaps be relieved that they do not pay Premier League prices.

The cheapest season ticket at Arsenal is £1,014, while Manchester United fans stump up a maximum of £950.
