A NEW school year has started — and that is not the only thing that is new at one Prestwich school.

For staff and pupils at Sedgley Park Primary School in Bishops Road had been putting their heads together for the past year to create a new uniform, which youngsters are now wearing to class with pride.

The smart outfit shows off the school's new logo and motto, with new headteacher Mr John Gregory now in place to take over from long-standing predecessor Patrick Reid.

Assistant headteacher Helen Forrester explained what brought about the raft of changes.

"Following a change in the management structure from September 2014, we decided that we wanted to look at the school uniform, logo and motto.

"The school council agreed unanimously that it was time for a change and pupils were eager to change the uniform."

As part of a homework task, pupils were asked to design their ideal school uniform.

Mrs Forrester continued: "Some of ideas were fantastic.

"We had one little girl in our nursery who cut out Disney princess dresses because she wanted to come to school dressed as a princess each day.

"The logo designs were amazing too. The mottos were also great and the pupils had really thought of inspiring phrases."

Pupils and parents were surveyed and were able to choose the shortlisted designs.

To keep costs for parents low, the school has forked out for bags, PE bags and ties for all pupils.

"Our last Ofsted inspection resulted in a 'good' rating and we’re hoping to make it 'outstanding' next time,” added Mrs Forrester.

"Children have arrived at school looking smart and walking that bit taller and I think this will prove to be a change for the better after hard work and consideration by everyone associated with the school."
