A FIVE-a-side football contest netted a reward for charity.

A total of 12 teams gathered at the Play Football centre in Market Street, Bury, to compete in a tournament in aid of The Fed, which runs Heathlands Village Care Home in Prestwich.

The players collected a combined £8,000 in sponsorship pledges for the competition, which was organised by Whitefield pals Nigel Woolfstein and Sheldon Bean.

The winning team was entered by Manchester-based financial asset management firm Close Brothers.

Of the July 19 event, Zoe Slotwiner of the Fed's fundraising team, said: "The atmosphere was very highly charged but friendly at the same time and it was great to hold an event that brought the whole community together.

"Nigel and Sheldon did a brilliant job.

"We can't thank them enough and the good news is that they plan to make this an annual event for The Fed."
