THE Fusilier Museum in Bury is to embark on a new campaign to recruit volunteers to its expanding team.

The award-winning museum is on the lookout for individuals who can help run a variety of activities or undertake tasks.

Volunteers are required to fulfil roles such as helping run a six-week summer programme of events; family history research; shop cover during school holidays; catering; and meet and greet staff for corporate events as well as general museum visitors during weekends.

There are also volunteer positions to help with the general marketing of the museum to different audiences.

Applications from would-be volunteers should be submitted by Wednesday June 24 and successful applicants will be invited to a recruitment day at the Moss Street museum on Wednesday July 8.

General manager Helen Smith said: “As a self-financing visitor attraction, we rely heavily on securing grants, fundraising and volunteers who help us deliver activity on a day-to-day basis. At the moment, we have more than 35 volunteers who undertake various roles within the museum and without their help and commitment we simply wouldn’t be able to do half the things that we do now. Therefore, it’s really important that we add to this team as the business grows.”

Senior volunteer Joyce Elliott, aged 85, said “I started volunteering at the museum in 2003 when I was 77 years-old and it was during the fundraising period to build the new museum in Bury town centre. The museum is a developing project and you're never too old to be needed, everyone can do something to help."

She added: "I just love it. It's like having an extended family.”
