VISUALLY impaired children from Bury and their parents can enrol on a new free course.

Henshaws Society for Blind People is running workshops to help youngsters learn hands-on skills to become more independent.

The course is open to those aged eight to 18 from anywhere in Greater Manchester.

It will take place in Old Trafford, Stockport and Oldham for three hours a week and for six weeks.

Each course will start with a one-day workshop for parents and carers, where they will learn how to nurture the skills their children learn during the course.

After that, sessions for children will begin and they will take place either on one evening per week or on a Saturday.

There will also be a separate four-day program during school holidays.

Henshaws children and young people enablement officer Natalie Thompson said: "This is a tailored short course which will help children grow into confident and independent young adults and to help parents support their children.

"Children will have the chance to meet other youngsters with visual impairments and make friends, spend time away from their families to become more independent, learn new life skills and feel good about themselves."
