A 38-year-old man drank four cans of beer in 45 minutes before driving through a crowd of revellers walking to the T in the Park music festival.

David Hughes drove from Cheshire to attend the festival and initially parked his car at 8.30am before opening several beers.

He told a court yesterday he had drunk four cans less than an hour later when a steward asked him to move to another car park.

Despite being more than double the legal limit, Hughes got into his car and drove off - only to be reported for drink-driving by the same steward.

At Perth Sheriff Court, Hughes, of Ellesmere Port, admitted drink driving on the A91 Cupar to Stirling road on July 12.

Sheriff Robert McCreadie expressed surprise that anyone would drink so much alcohol at such an early hour and told Hughes his reading was "far too high".

He banned Hughes from driving for 18 months and fined him £800.
