BURGLARS are targeting unlocked homes, garages, sheds and cars in Prestwich, police chiefs have warned.

Thieves have stole thousands of pounds worth of goods in the past 10 days and officers are urging people to lock up securely.

On March 7, a window was left open at a house in Whittaker Lane, allowing burglars to steal jewellery and electrical items.

Also that day, thieves stole a red and white Husqvarna 125cc motorbike worth £6,000.

At 2am on March 8, items were stolen from an unlocked car in Bent Lane. At 6.40am, thieves stole gardening equipment from an unlocked shed in the back garden of a house in Bury New Road, Sedgley.

A car was left unlocked in Danesway on March 9 and raiders rifled through the glovebox, though fled empty handed.

On March 10, a front door was left unlocked in Lowther Road, and a set of house keys were stolen.

Thieves fled with items from a garage in Sheepfoot Lane via an unlocked door last Friday night.

Inspector Ben Cottam, of Prestwich Police, said: "We understand that people have busy lives, but all these incidents could have been prevented if people simply locked doors and kept windows closed.

"It only takes a minute for a burglar to enter your home and steal belongings, yet it only takes a minute to lock your doors and windows.

"In vehicles, keep valuables out of view, and don't leave garden tools or furniture outside. They could be used to commit a burglary."
