Prestwich eaterie Cuckoo has clocked up a new award.

The bar on Bury New Road achieved first place in the Best Premium Casual Dining category for north Manchester, at the first Eat Drink Sleep Awards.

It was among four eateries recognised at the glitzy ceremony held in Manchester recognising the top venues across the region.

The Clarence in Bury, as well as Levanter and the Hearth of the Ram, both located in Ramsbottom, all picked up accolades held at the Mercure Piccadilly Hotel, which have been dubbed 'The Drinkies',

More than 63,000 votes were cast by members of the public across 34 different categories, which were then separated into regions of south, central and north Manchester, with awards ranging from Best Pub to Best Luxury Hotel.

The Clarence was named Best Dining Pub, Hearth of the Ram claimed the Best Premium Dining award, and Levanter was voted Best Newcomer.

A Cuckoo spokesman said: “We would like to thank everyone who voted for us in the Eat Drink Sleep awards.

“It is such an honour to have been nominated alongside some absolutely fantastic bars and restaurants.

“But to win is something we are very proud of.

“From all of us at Cuckoo thank you so, so much for your continuing support.”

Levanter is a tapas restaurant run by husband and wife team Joe and Fiona Botham.

Staff member Fionnan McCloskey said: "The really good thing about these awards is that the winners are voted by the customers, and it is they who have crowned us the winner.

"We have only been open since April last year, so to get such recognition is fantastic.

"We are really surprised at how how quickly it has taken off, and we are really busy at the moment. We don't take any bookings at all, which helps to give the restaurant a more local feel, as people can still get in at weekends without calling ahead."

The Clarence claimed an award after an even shorter period of time, having opened its doors in October last year.

Paul Kilroe, the founder of the awards, added: "Everyone has an amazing night and it was a fantastic springboard for our Liverpool and Leeds ceremonies."
