HEAVY snow has affected schools, buses and roads across Bury today.

Four primary schools in Ramsbottom have been closed for the day, while motorists have been stuck in heavy traffic because of the weather conditions.

St Andrew’s Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School, Peel Brow Primary School and Hazelhurst Community Primary School have all closed because of the weather.

Two lorries on Bolton Street in Ramsbottom had become stuck earlier this morning, but traffic is now flowing after the vehicles were moved.

Patricia Glover, who works at a care home in Haslingden, had to abandon her car on Bolton Street in Ramsbottom after the treacherous conditions meant she could not get to work.

Mrs Glover, of Conway Close, said: “The cold weather has been well advertised for the past few days, but there was no gritters in sight.”

The 61-year-old added: “The same thing happened two weeks ago. I have let people down because I haven’t been able to get to work.”

Bury Council said that gritters had been out four times since 6pm last night.

Bus company Rosso Transport earlier suspended all of its services, with the firm saying the roads were too unsafe.

However services are now beginning to return to normal.

The 477 bus is currently not serving Summerseat or Nuttall Lane, the 480 is not serving Affetside and the 487 is not covering Nangreaves.

Earlier this morning, First Manchester was forced to divert the 98 bus in Radcliffe via Radcliffe New Road, because of the weather conditions on Stand Lane, but the service has now returned to its full route.

The bus company said that there are major delays on the 468 route between Fairfield Hospital and Rochdale.

Motorists are being urged to take care on the M66, with the conditions being described as “hazardous” due to the snow.

Flights from Manchester Airport were grounded from 9.30am, resuming at about 1.30pm with delays.

In addition, National Rail is urging train users to check before they travel.

The Met Office has issued a warning for snow, which it says will continue to fall today and into Friday morning.

It read: “Showers of sleet, snow and hail will continue through the rest of Thursday and into Friday morning, although at lower levels there will be a gradual trend towards rain and sleet from Thursday evening onwards. This will bring a risk of further snow, especially on higher ground, along with icy stretches on untreated surfaces.”

The snow is expected to turn to rain tomorrow.
