A GRANDMOTHER-OF-FOUR died hours after her head was hit by a toilet door in a care home, an inquest has heard.

Anne Horner, aged 81, died at Salford Royal Hospital on March 25 last year about seven hours after the incident at Oak Lodge Care Home in Bury New Road, Prestwich.

The inquest, which began at Bury and Rochdale Coroner's Court in Heywood today, heard that the woman had also been involved in an almost identical incident at Oak Lodge on March 6 when a toilet door struck her head as she was sat in the bathroom.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Mrs Horner had suffered bleeding in her brain and that was recorded as the primary cause of death.

Coroner Simon Nelson was told that two contributing factors were that Mrs Horner suffered from cancer affecting her back and kidneys and the fact that she was taking medication to treat that condition.

Legal counsel representing the care home raised the possibility that Mrs Horner may have died after suffering a fall three hours before she died, rather than as a result of injuries sustained by the impact of the toilet door.

The inquest resumes tomorrow.
