A COMPETITION which offered a visit from pop group McFly as a prize has been found to be in breach of television rules.

Media regulator Ofcom said the competition on BBC North West Tonight was unfair because some schools had no chance of winning.

The competition was open to all primary schools in the North-west but, on the final day, McFly - which includes Bolton's Danny Jones - said they could only visit a school in Greater Manchester.

The band's decision meant that a number of schools which entered the competition were no longer able to win it and Ofcom said BBC producers should have made the situation clear before the closing date.

The BBC has "apologised unreservedly" for not telling schools this was the case.

It told Ofcom that it had a number of options: to cancel the competition, openly explain the problem to viewers or privately exclude schools outside Greater Manchester.

Producers decided on the latter option but have pointed out that the winning school was the best entrant in the competition, run in conjunction with the charity Comic Relief.

The BBC accepted the process was unfair and Ofcom accepted there was limited harm because entry was free and the best school won.

But the regulator ruled that in future viewers must be informed as soon as possible.

They deserve all the respect they can get in their field. They all play their own instruments and write their own music and from what I've seen flicking channels, they put on a hell of a show. Unlike half the pop 'bands' out there, these guys deserve all the attention they recieve simply because they're honest in what they do. No cover ups.

As it happens i have watched this 'Trash' live, at the M.E.N and never before have I seen such a band work and perform so hard! They play all thier own instruments, write tier own songs, bounce up and down on the stage and still manage to sing every note without sounding out of Breath. what a band. McFly rule.. woo hehe

if you think that you're obviously one of those ignorant narrow-minded "i think i know everything about music" people who think you have to be a punk rock band to get respect in the music industry. if you didn't know "pop" is short for popular so i don't know what teenage misfit music you've been listening to but i'll stay with the most hardworking brit pop band i know.
