Double defeat for Stand

STAND suffered a double defeat in the Lancashire County League at the weekend.

On Saturday they went down by 25 runs at title-challenging Denton St Lawrence and they followed up with a 41-run defeat at home to Woodhouses.

Pro Amila Weththasinghe put Stand in the driving seat at Denton when he picked up three early wickets including the scalp of danger man Matt Wake which reduced the home side to 27-3 after 10 overs.

Steve Dublin played an uncharacteristically patient innings and, along with Ghulam Abbas, moved the score on to 119 before the overdue introduction of Stuart Catterall removed him for 52 from 80 balls.

Abbas reached 38 before being caught by Paul Duerden off the bowling of Carl Sutcliffe with the home side on 136-6.

Sutcliffe then picked up two further wickets in his 17th over and Catterall bowled Morrell to complete a fine comeback with the ball as Denton were all out for 142, Sutcliffe finishing with excellent figures of 4-45 and Catterall 3-18.

Stand struggled with the bat as a middle order collapse saw them reach 86-7. They moved it on to 114-7 and their hopes of winning suffered a major blow when Catterall was out for a top score of 26.

Twenty four hours later Stand suffered a terrible start as Woodhouses were 138-1 with 13 overs to go.

Carl Sutcliffe turned on the style to take 5-73 but the visitors made 220-7.

Weththasinghe made 42 in Stand’s reply but they were staring defeat in the face on 89-6. Matt Holt — fresh from a second team 50 the day before — and Gary Penchion added some respectability to the score with a 45-run partnership for the seventh wicket, before Penchion departed for 16.

Sutcliffe joined Holt and the pair added a useful 41 runs for the eighth wicket.

Sutcliffe hit 15 including two massive sixes, before Holt brought up his half century from 63 balls.

The pair took the score to 165 but, with only 14 balls remaining, it was almost impossible to reach the 221 needed. Holt was out for a fine 54 and Sutcliffe 15. Jack Bond blocked out the final four balls to leave his side with a point.

On Saturday the first team travel to Thornham and on Sunday a Stand Xl take on a Sedgley Park Rugby Club Xl at Stand in a 30-over game, 2pm start.
