STAND avenged their defeat at Denton earlier in the season with a 68-run victory.
The Whitefield men made a solid start before Matt Curphey (17) was removed with the score on 38.
Professional Amila Weththasinghe joined Oliver Beirne in the middle and the pair pressed home the team’s authority on the game.
Beirne was in excellent form hitting a number of elegant straight drives down the ground.
Weththasinghe added a quickfire 30, Chris Holt made 20 and Stuart Catterall a brisk 18 to leave the home side in a strong position approaching the final 10 overs.
Beirne eventually went for a fine 47, as Steve Wharton and Andrew Neill put the brakes on Stand’s charge but they were unable to prevent them from batting out the overs as Karl Sutcliffe (11no) and Gary Bond (5no), added 12 in the final over.
Stand finished on 175-9 with Neill finishing with economical figures of 3-60 from 25 overs and Steve Wharton picking up 5-29 with his part-time leg spin.
In reply, the Denton top order was decimated by some hostile and accurate pace bowling from the opening pair of Weththasinghe and Sutcliffe.
They reduced Denton to 30-5 inside 12 overs and an early finish looked on the cards.
However, Martin Neill and Rick Leech doubled the score to 60 before Catterall struck to remove Leech for 10. Two more wickets fell quickly with Catterall and Sutcliffe doing the damage, and the mainstay of the visitor’s innings, Martin Neill, was removed by Weththasinghe for 34 with the change of ends working a treat to leave Denton on 75-9.
A final wicket partnership of 32 — the highest of the innings — between Steve Roebuck and Neill frustrated Stand’s fielders and bowlers alike, before Matt Curphey found Roebuck’s edge for 13 to wrap up a 68-run victory.
Neill finished unbeaten on 18, with all four of Stand’s bowlers amongst the wickets, Weththasinghe (4-57), Sutcliffe (3-29), Catterall (2-9) and Curphey (1-10).
Stand travel to Denton St Lawrence on Saturday and host Woodhouses on Sunday.
The second team also overcame a strong Denton second team away as second met third in Division Two.
Denton won the toss and batted first, making a competitive 142 all out, with Tim Clements claiming four wickets. In reply, Stand’s batsmen struggled in the conditions and were reduced to 70-7 with plenty of overs left.
Jack Ritchie and Chris Marlor then formed an unbeaten match-winning partnership for the eighth wicket to see the team home with 10 overs to spare.
Ritchie was the main contributor as he blasted 61, with Marlor providing excellent support at the other end finishing 17no.
