Dreaded rain curse strikes

You did not need to be a weatherman to predict there would be rain last Saturday — you only needed to check Prestwich’s fixture list.

Their games at Woodbank have been blighted by the weather over many seasons, and last Saturday proved no different.

There was more hope of launching the RNLI lifeboat than pitching stumps as a 24-hour cascade left the Bury ground rain-drenched.

However, it allowed leaders Denton West to stretch the gap at the top of the Lees Lancashire County League to three points after they managed to beat Glossop in a reduced-overs game.

Prestwich remain second, but Denton St Lawrence also took advantage of Prestwich’s inactivity to lie in their shadow, just two points behind in third place.

The second team game is at The Heys also bit the dust to leave both divisions looking relatively wide open.

Prestwich arguably face their biggest test of the season on Saturday when arch-rivals Stand make the short trip to The Heys.

Stand, positioned in mid-table under the leadership of Paul Wilkinson will be looking for a repeat dose of last year’s clash when they racked up a mighty total of 262 in the face of an inept fielding performance and won by 41 runs.

The game, which starts at 1.30pm, is also being featured as part of the Love Prestwich Festival. An open day is being held at Prestwich, Cricket, Tennis and Bowling Club, situated off Heys Road, where people are invited to watch the derby clash, as well as sample some of the other sporting activities and facilities at the club between noon and 6pm.
