Cup is more to Stand's liking

IT was a weekend mixed for Stand CC with a home defeat in the Lancashire County League on Saturday to Denton St Lawrence followed by a 30-run victory in the Walkden Cup at Woodhouses the following day.

The visitors made the most of their decision to bat on Saturday, racking up 249-7.

Stand started their reply well enough despite the loss of a couple of early wickets, progressing at a decent run rate and matching Lawrence’s pace of the first innings.

They reached 110-3 at the half-way stage with Dave Taylor anchoring the innings on the way to a half century. He was ably supported by Chris Holt (33), but the pair departed in quick succession and that sparked a lower-order collapse to end hopes of victory.

But Matt Curphey and Paul Wilkinson stuck to their task to end the innings at 187-9 and earn a batting point.

Stand had the bowling performances of professional Amila Wesththasinghe(5-58 and Carl Sutcliffe (4-38) to thank for their win at Woodhouses.

But it looked ominous for the Whitefield men when the posted a meagre first innings total of 135 all out with Dave Taylor top scoring on 22.

Wesththasinghe provided the early breakthrough in the Woodhouses innings, removing Steve Clarke (4) caught behind before Gary Penchion took a brilliant diving catch at slip off Sutcliff to remove James Clarke (4).

Woodhouses pro Alles (1) quickly followed and Gawler was trapped lbw to leave his men 31-4.

Only Starmer (38) provided resistence as the hosts were skittled for 105.
